Tönnies still in top five slaughterhouses

Tönnies Germany is still one of the top 5 largest slaughterhouses in the world. The slaughterhouse is in fifth place this year, last year it was still fourth. This is according to a study by Pig International.

The German Tönnies slaughtered approximately 2016 million pigs in 18. The Dutch Vion is not in the top 5, but ranks 17. In 2016, Vion slaughtered about 6,5 million pigs.

China on top
The Chinese WH group, which also owns Smithfield in the United States (US), leads the pack with 51,8 million pig slaughters. The company has operations in China, the US, Mexico, Poland and Romania. 

Danish Crown is in second place. That slaughterhouse slaughtered about 2016 million pigs in 25. Quite a difference from the number 1. JBS USA is third with 24 million pig slaughters in 2016.

Over 200 million
The top 10 largest slaughterhouses jointly slaughtered more than 2016 million pigs in 200. By comparison, this is about 83% of all pig slaughter in the European Union.
