Agricultural Census 2017

Pig farming yield at record level

30 November 2017 - Esther de Snoo - 9 comments

Pig farmers are having a good year from a commercial point of view. In 2017 they earn more than 3 times as much as in 2010. This is apparent from figures from Statistics Netherlands, published on Thursday 30 November. The standard yield is more than €900.000.

Based on the results of the 2017 Agricultural Census, CBS announces developments in the various agricultural sectors. For pig farming, they will earn a standard yield this year that is 3 times the size of 7 years ago. Then the standard yield approximately €277.000 per year.

Record high
From the numbers It is striking that from 2010 the standard yields of pig farmers will rise to a record high in 2017. About 38% of the pig farmers have a successor. This is the lowest number compared to the other agricultural sectors.

According to Statistics Netherlands, the degree of specialization in pig farming appears to be complete, because the standard yield from the core activity is no longer increasing. In pig farming, the degree of specialization has remained at 3% for the past 91 years. Pig farming is the most specialized compared to the other agricultural sectors.

Less expansion in pig farming
The number of companies expanding, such as a farm shop or care farm, is lowest in pig farming. About 12,2% of the pig farms have an expansion activity. On average, this is more than 35% of arable farming, dairy farming and pig farming combined.

Statistics Netherlands shows that broadening activities pay little. For 62% of all farms with widening, the contribution of the widening to the total yield of the farm is less than 10%. At 69% of the pig farms, the expansion activities contribute for less than 10% of the total yield.

What a crap story 900.000 € income, this must be revenues, this says nothing about the income.

Another mood-making that pig farmers are capitalists.

Now we can also earn something and if you explain it, do it well.
john 30 November 2017
first the pigs have to go because they don't earn anything anyway, if they earn something, they have to go because the previous years were badly earned..

Have already had a lot of jealous looks from dairy farmers when it comes to income over the past 2 years... Pigs are just participating again!

Dear,

There was indeed a mistake in writing the article. As several have said, it is about the standard yield and not about the income of a pig farmer. Thanks for the alertness!

happy piglet 30 November 2017
I wonder if this is a new number.

All nice and nice, how did CBS get these numbers?? Last year there was a lot of commotion that nothing was sent in. It was on the news that the turnover was determined by Statistics Netherlands on the basis of VAT returns (tax authorities). I wonder if this is even allowed? The tax authorities that pass on data....

Will Kimberly again come up with a response to the question of what the new standard yield figure means?
You can no longer respond.
