Inside: Pig Market

German slaughterhouses are also going to lower soon

12 December 2017 - Wouter Baan

Somewhat surprisingly, the pig price in Germany remained stable last Wednesday. This was surprising, because Vion Netherlands already rocked the pig market on Monday. Due to the sharp fall in the Internet exchange, the German pig price is now on the verge of breaking.

The Internet Exchange was trading at around €1,48 per kilo for weeks. That stable trend was broken on Tuesday, December 12, as the indicator of the German pig market fell by €0,05 to €1,43 per kilo. This means that the quotation has fallen €0,02 below the level of the German pig price (€1,45 per kilo). The fact that only 4 of the 10 lots on offer have been traded is a signal that the mood in Germany is changing in the penultimate week before Christmas.

Wide range, disappointing meat market
The Internet Exchange is usually a reliable precursor to the German pig price. The supply in Germany is described as substantial, while the meat market looks tame. Demand varies per carcass part, on balance the carcass is disappointing for this time of year; in particular the sale of bacon. In the Netherlands the DCA Scholarship Award already down by €0,05 on Friday to €1,31 per kilo. There are expectations that the German pig price may fall even faster on Wednesday, December 13.

European pig prices, with the exception of the Netherlands, remain stable this week. The Netherlands drops in the ISN price comparison by €0,05 to €1,27 per kilo. In general, the range for European slaughterhouses is comfortably wide to serve the meat market. Falling European pig prices are therefore probably on the way. The Internet Exchange fell below the German pig price (ZMP) in week 50.
