In the German state of Bavaria, the pig population is still declining. In 2017, the number of pig farmers decreased by 5,7% to 5.100 pigs, the number of pigs shrank by 1,4% to more than 3,3 million.
What is striking in the November count is that the number of pigs (weight class between 25 and 50 kilos) has shrunk considerably: by 8,7% to 565.000 animals. This indicates that there is a smaller supply of finishers in Bavaria in the first quarter of 2018. In contrast, there were more piglets in November, 0,8% more piglets to over 900.000. The number of finishing pigs, on the other hand, has remained virtually stable at 1,59 million animals.
Pig farms are disappearing
The number of sow farmers (-7% to 2.200 farms) fell faster in 2017 than among fattening pig farmers (-5,4% to 4.300 farms). In 2012, Bavaria still had 3.300 sow farmers and 6.000 fattening pig farmers.
