Inside: Pig Market

Piglet price stable, slaughterhouses are fine-tuning

27 December 2017 - Wouter Baan - 3 comments

Trade on the Dutch piglet market continues quietly between Christmas and New Year. The mood is not disappointing, but there is no question of price turmoil. Vion and Compaxo have refined the pig price.

The piglet trade is not described as disappointing. Fattening pig farmers are opposed to any form of price increases, but not so much to the imposition of piglets. Many stables have been emptied in recent weeks. This means that space has been created for new additions.

The market in Germany is also reasonably well balanced in terms of supply and demand. It is expected that the German piglet price (€41,50) for 2018 will no longer be out of place.

Spain gives a distorted picture
Sales to export destinations are not in line with the movement shown in the Spanish piglet price. In the past week, the Spanish piglet price increased by no less than €3 to €37 per piglet. This does not mean that sales are disappointing. However, there are rumors that the Spaniards are bidding back on Dutch piglets.

The piglet market can start to flourish in early January

Almost everyone agrees that this is not the week to increase or decrease. The DCA BestPigletPrice therefore remains at €38 per piglet. Vion also keeps the price the same. However, it is noted that the market may start to move in the first weeks of January, when life returns to its normal rhythm.

Vion corrects
Vion slaughterhouse has reduced the pig price by €0,01 to €1,37 per kilo. On balance, Vion's pig price has fallen by €4 over the past 0,08 weeks. This week's reduction can be seen as a response to previous reductions at other slaughterhouses, which also corrected €0,08. Compaxo has also reduced by €0,01 to €1,30 per kilo.

The German pig price (VEZG) remained at €2017 per kilo in the last week of 1,37. Van Rooi also keeps the price unchanged at €1,30 per kilo.
