Inside: Pig Market

DCA Stock Exchange just started in 2018

29 December 2017 - Wouter Baan

In the last week of 2017 there are enough pigs to fill the slaughter hooks. Will this situation remain the same at the start of the new year and how will the DCA Scholarship Award 2.0 respond to this?

While the German pork price stabilized this week at €1,37 per kilo, the Dutch slaughterhouses (Vion and Compaxo) adjusted the quotations slightly. This week, the worst of the price pressure on the listings seemed to have subsided. Still, things can still get exciting in early January. There are still many pigs that are on the heavy side and the meat market is not price-sensitive.

It is still exciting how the market will develop in 2018

New Year's Day falls favorably
However, history shows that the start of a new year can be turbulent. Whether this will also happen in 2018 remains to be seen. At the start of the week (Wednesday), the market largely assumed that 2018 would start quietly. Supply versus demand could probably regain its balance fairly quickly, once the broken slaughter weeks are over.

This expectation was partly based on the fact that New Year's Day falls on a Monday. According to slaughterhouses, this is beneficial. The hope is that the meat market will soon receive support again in the new year.

Meat market busy
The reality, however, is that the meat market is still under considerable pressure, even this week. The hams, shoulders and middles had to give up a few cents per kilo. Meat buyers also seem to be in mood for next week and want to reduce prices. We have to wait and see how the situation will develop further in the new year.

For the time being, the DCA Exchange Price 2.0 will remain unchanged for next week at €1,29 per kilo for slaughtered pigs. The price of live pigs is also the same at €1,02 per kilo.
