Lodders afraid of African swine fever

10 January 2018 - Wouter Baan - 1 reaction

Member of Parliament Helma Lodders (VVD) is concerned that African swine fever in Eastern Europe is spreading further. That is why she has submitted parliamentary questions to the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (LNV).

African swine fever is a major problem in Eastern Europe† Numerous outbreaks are known in countries such as Poland, the Czech Republic and Ukraine. Also in Russia spreads the disease. To prevent African swine fever from spreading further in Europe, the German Minister of Agriculture (Christian Schmidt) recently instructed pig farmers to strictly adhere to hygiene measures. Lodders is also concerned.

Is Schouten informed?
In the parliamentary questions that Lodders has submitted, she wonders whether agriculture minister Carola Schouten is aware of the advancing swine fever in Europe. Lodders van Schouten also wants to know exactly which hygiene measures Germany has prescribed.

In addition, Lodders wants an estimate from Schouten about how great the chance is that African swine fever will break out in the Netherlands, and what the economic damage will be.

If the relationship is high enough, you run a risk. It won't be there, will it?
