Piglet market goes in all directions

22 January 2018 - Wouter Baan - 32 comments

There are contradictions going on in the European piglet market. Prices in Belgium and Spain, for example, are increasing, but there is a sharp decrease in Germany. How does the DCA BestPigletPrice (BPP) respond to this?

The North/West committee keeps its word: after the trend report announced a reduction of €2,50 per piglet last week, this has been implemented in the listing today (January 22). This means that the German piglet price has fallen to €39 per piglet.

Since 2011, the German piglet price has not fallen in January. The German reduction in the piglet market is a result of the pig price, which already increased in January down significantly went. The expectation is that it will remain at 1 reduction, given that the trend report for this week is unchanged.

BPP remains standing
Fattening pig farmers in Germany are still reluctant to stock piglets. This rigid attitude is also experienced by Dutch traders. In our own country, sales are much smoother and the piglets are easily placed. On balance, there is a wait-and-see attitude across Europe. The Spaniards also seem to be becoming more reluctant to impose, although the quotation there still increased by €0,50 to €40 per piglet. Also in Belgium plus various piglet quotations.

A lackluster European demand is offset by a relatively tight Dutch piglet supply. The German reduction therefore leaves the BPP cold, because the quotation remains at €38 per piglet. The Danish quotation also remains at €46,30 per piglet (30 kilos).

Vion unchanged
Although according to Vion there is price pressure on the meat market, the pork price remains at €1,30 per kilo. According to Vion, meat sales are accompanied by headwinds. By supporting the pork price, Vion is trying to stop falling meat prices. This is how the country's largest slaughterhouse justifies its choice for unchanged.
