Boycott EU pork

Russia wipes demand of 1,39 billion euros off the table

23 January 2018 - Wouter Baan - 1 reaction

Russia has brushed aside the €1,39 billion request for compensation, which the European Union (EU) is demanding for the illegal boycott of European pork. In the Russian press, the Ministry of Economic Development says that the demand is unfounded.

From the beginning of 2014 to the end of 2017, Russia used a boycot on European pork. This is due to outbreaks of African swine fever in Eastern Europe. According to the World Trade Organization (WTO), the Russian import ban was illegal† That is why, at the end of 2017, Brussels submitted a claim of €1,39 billion (per year that Russia banned European pork).

Charge unfounded
Maxim Medvedkov, head of the Russian Ministry of Economic Development, has said he does not agree with Europe's demand. Before the end of January, Russia will enter into talks with the WTO to formally object to the European indictment.
