Research agenda POV

1,2 million euros for research in the pig sector

29 January 2018 - Wouter Baan

The Producers Organization for Pig Farming (POV) has drawn up a research agenda for pig farming. For the period from 2017 to 2020, €1,2 million research funding has been made available. These include themes such as boar taint and piglet vitality.

In a press statement, the POV states that research is important for the cost price position of the Dutch pig sector. After the disappearance of the Product Boards, there was no longer any collective financing for this. The producer organization is changing that by drawing up a research agenda. The aim is to collaborate with the business community and the government.

The themes that the POV wants to focus on in the coming years are: piglet vitality, tail biting, boar taint, data and antibiotic reduction. Pig farmer Bart Verhees (portfolio holder Research and Innovation) has been put forward as the driving force behind the day-to-day management of the POV. Of the €1,2 million, 50% is financed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (LNV).
