The plan of the Italian meat concern Pini to open a slaughterhouse in the German state of Lower Saxony has failed. This is Pini's third attempt to achieve their slaughter ambitions in Germany.
Pini was working on a plan to invest €70 million in the town of Molbergen, which falls under the district of Cloppenberg, for the construction of a slaughterhouse. The slaughterhouse must have a slaughter capacity of 25.000 pigs per day. Ludger Möller, mayor of Molbergen, has announced in the German media that the plan is off the table. This is due to resistance in the region.
Social resistance
Both citizens and the Cloppenberg district were very concerned about the arrival of the slaughterhouse. These concerns were related, among other things, to possible odor nuisance, the risk of water pollution and the increase in freight traffic in the region. Due to the strict requirements set by the district, Pini has decided to abandon the plans.
The Italian meat group already tried a closed factory of Vion, also in Lower Saxony. Those attempts also failed.
