Create end date start 2019

Schouten in conversation about docking piglet tails

6 February 2018 - Kimberly Bakker - 1 reaction

At the beginning of 2019, Minister Carola Schouten (Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality) will discuss an end date for docking piglet tails with the pig sector. Schouten said in a letter to the House of Representatives.

Schouten expects that in 2019 more and more companies will be able to take the step to keep piglets with curly tails successful. She bases this on experiences in 2018 and the use of a risk assessment and enrichment material, writes Schouten.

Necessary for risk factors to be limited

However, this requires that the risk factors for tail biting are minimized, so that outbreaks can be prevented as much as possible. This means that animal caretakers must be able to quickly identify an outbreak, that an effective safety net is available (to stop the biting behaviour) and that there is adequate emergency shelter.

Research agenda Pig farming
Agreements have recently been made between the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality and the Pig Farming Producers Organization (POV) about the multi-year financing of the Pig Farming Research Agenda. This agenda offers a firm place to stop docking piglet tails.

The Dutch pig chain already signed the Dalfsen Declaration in June 2013, with the aim of stopping the docking of piglet tails in a responsible manner.

Wow, a bold statement!
"based on experiences from (the year is only coldly a month old!) 2018" they want an end date in 2019.

POV still needs to find 10 pig farmers to be able to give experiences of 2018.

"The Dutch pig chain already signed the Dalfsen Declaration in June 2013, with the aim of stopping the docking of piglet tails in a responsible manner."

Besides the question whether 'The statement of Dalfsen' still has any legitimacy (?) I want to emphasize 'responsible manner'!
What if it is not found? (and please do not come up with the (4-day requirement) argument; it is possible provided management is in order) Do you also dare to state that there will be no end date?

This sounds the same to me as when the sows had to be housed in group and we were suddenly the only country in Europe to be able to release them in 4 days....... and we all know how well that works on many companies.... I would rather not see animal suffering at many companies if they abolish this quickly and say, good management will solve it, yes yes......
You can no longer respond.
