The gap between supply and demand on the German piglet market is increasing. According to the ISN (the German advocacy group), there is currently an extremely high demand for piglets; especially now that the pig price has not yet reached its ceiling in the short term. The German piglet price (the North/West) has once again increased from €2 to €44 per piglet over the past week. A similar increase has been announced for this week.

Pig price potential
While one person thinks that the piglet market is at its maximum with a single plus, others see the trees as high as the sky. This somewhat opportunistic mood is mainly driven by rapidly rising pig prices. A spring revival is usually common at the pig market, but this early in the year is not common. Especially because reductions are usually not an option until July, which means that there is still considerable room for increase.

Vion's pork price is rising again this week; just like last week, the quotation increases by €0,05 to €1,50 per kilo.

Surcharges discussed
Due to the changed mood, the word allowances has been discussed again. Propagators feel encouraged by the shortage. The market has therefore opted for a strict basic price, in order to prevent proliferation of surcharges.

There are currently too few piglets in the Netherlands; partly because Spain is on the market. The DCA BPP therefore increases by €2,50 to €46 per piglet. This is not yet the level at which the quotation was last year in the same week, when the BPP was quoted at €54,50 in week 9.

€46,00 (+2,50) € 44,00 - € 47,00 15 €45,47
Explanation DCA quotations: Spain is still leading the way in the purchase of piglets. Germany is a lot quieter. Sales in our own country are going well, which means that overall there is more demand than piglets. To keep the surcharges manageable, this week we again opted for rounding upwards.
