While the compound feed price indicator initially predicted price-bearing lump prices towards the summer, further price increases are now on the horizon. The feed price also picks up in February; for example, the price of fattening pig chunks rises by €0,05 to €23,65 per 100 kilos. The compound feed price indicator foresees a leveling off in March and foresees slightly rising prices from the third quarter.

Wheat, barley and corn up
The reason for the rising feed prices stems from the raw materials angle. Since the start of 2018, the prices of EU feed wheat, barley and maize (Rotterdam) have risen sharply. If there is no speedy correction, it is likely that those changes will be translated into lump prices. These raw materials are the most dominantly present in most compositions of fattening pig chunks.

Also soybean is used in the mixing process; that price closed at its highest level in a year ($1 per tonne) on Thursday, March 380, on the CBoT. This is due to persistent drought in Argentina.

Strongest increase: sow pellet gestation
With a plus of €0,15, the largest price increase is due to sow pellet gestation (€23,55 per 100 kilos). Zeugenbrok lakto recorded a plus of €0,10 to €28,10 per 100 kilos, the highest level since April. A similar increase is visible for start/transition pellet and baby piglet pellet, which climb to €27,65 and €34,65 per 100 kilos respectively.
