German pig farmer hardly invests

6 March 2018 - Wouter Baan

German pig and poultry farmers are less and less willing to invest in new barns. Research by AgriDirect (Germany) shows that only 6,5% of livestock farmers have building plans.

The research shows that the willingness to invest in new construction has shrunk considerably in the past 2 years. In 2016, for example, more than 7% was willing to invest, while in 2014 this number was still above 10%. The number of livestock farmers who say they want to renovate has also fallen; from 5,6% in 2016 to 4,2% in 2017.

welfare requirements
Possibly playing the stricter welfare requirements and the age of German pig farmers play a role. The study was conducted among pig farmers (with more than 500 fattening pigs or 100 sows) and poultry farmers who have at least 10.000 laying hens or 15.000 broilers.
