The pig sector in the United States (US) has started 2018 well in terms of exports. A constant volume is also needed, as the American pig herd continues to increase. The latter also applies to Canada and Russia.
The US never exported as much pork as in January this year (203.488 tons), although the increase is small compared to 1 year earlier. The value increased by 7% to $148,6 million, according to figures from the USMEF (the American meat product board). Dan Halstrom, chairman of the USMEF, speaks of a solid result.
The US shipped 11% more pork in January to 35.048 tonnes, bringing the value to $146,4 million (+17%). American beef is also in great demand; this volume increased by 9% to 105.486 tons. Exports to Mexico, the most important sales market (in volumes), increased by 1% to 72.997 tons. This generated $133,5 million (+4%).
More exports, more pigs
While the European pig herd is on the rise, the United States (US), Canada and Russia also recorded a plus. The pig herd in the US and Canada (combined) recorded 87,6 million pigs last December, a plus of 2% compared to the previous year and even 6% more than the 2015 count. This means that meat production in North America continues to increase. increases.
In the US, the count reached 73,2 million pigs (+2%) last December. The Canadian pig herd recorded 14,3 million pigs (+3%) last January. The number of pigs in Russia has increased by more than 1 million in 1 year to 23,3 million.
