Inside: Pig Market

Spanish opposition to high piglet prices

12 March 2018 - Wouter Baan

The upward flow, which has been in the piglet market for weeks, appears to be losing momentum soon. The DCA BestPigletPrice is up for the sixth week in a row, but this could just be the last increase. Why is it like that?

Piglet sales are encountering resistance; More and more fattening pig farmers express this. Now that the pig price is on the decline, they do not think higher piglet costs are justified. However, the supply of piglets on the piglet market is not too much. The supply/demand ratio is not much different than in the previous weeks. In other words: there is still a shortage.

Resistance cannot yet be read from the Spanish piglet price

Spain: more reserved
The reason why the piglet market may be heading towards a ceiling is due to the demand in Spain. Spanish buyers are increasingly reluctantly going along with the increases. Here and there it is sensed that the Spaniards are becoming more cautious, although this is not yet reflected in the Spanish piglet price (+€2 to €52). There is also competition from piglets from other European countries that are also offered in Spain.

The input from the DCA BestPigletPrice (BPP) shows that the majority of traders are still in favor of an increase. The BPP therefore increases by €1 to €49 per piglet. However, this could well be the last upward movement for a while (if the market situation remains the same). A stable piglet price is also on the way in Germany. Over the past week, the North/West piglet price has increased from €2 to €48. The trend report is unchanged with a slight increase.

Vion down with it
Following the DCA Scholarship Price 2.0 Vion also reduces the pig price by €0,02 to €1,48 per kilo. With a wide supply, the slaughterhouse says it has difficulty keeping meat prices afloat. A new balance between pork and meat prices is necessary. Vion does say that sales to Asia are not disappointing. Also American meat exporters realize stable volumes at the beginning of quarter 1.

DCA BestPigletPrice (week 11) Price range statements Number of problems Average of the problems

Explanation DCA Markets: In Spain, the saturation point of piglet hunger has been reached. Domestically, the uncertainty of pig prices continues to play a role, as does the pressure on meat prices, which makes an increase in the piglet price less acceptable. Completely in line with the statements, the DCA BestPigletPrice increases by one euro.
