Preventing African Swine Fever

Denmark builds fence at border with Germany

22 March 2018 - Wouter Baan

A fence will be built on the border between Denmark and Germany to keep out wild boars. This is with a view to spreading African swine fever. The Danish government wants to secure the export position of the pig sector with this.

The African Swine Fever is a serious threat to the Danish pig sector. If it comes to an outbreak, the export of pork to third countries (outside Europe) will come to a standstill. This represents a value of 11 million Danish kroner (approximately €1,4 billion). Denmark wants to safeguard this export value at all costs.

70 kilometers long
Esben Lunde Larsen, the Danish Minister of Environment and Food, says he does not want to take any risks. This is to prevent the disease from spreading to Denmark, because that would mean that the export value would be lost. A fence (70 kilometers long) is therefore placed on the border between Denmark and Germany to block the crossing of wild boars.

The height will be 2 meters, of which 1,5 meters will be above the ground. Passenger passageways will be placed throughout the route. The relevant landowners of the intended location will be notified of the plans shortly.

broader plan
The construction of the fence is part of a broader plan to prevent the introduction of African swine fever. For example, Danish pig farmers (professionally and as a hobby) receive information, while wild boar hunting is being increased in certain regions.

The construction of a fence against African swine fever is by the way not new† Earlier, Poland built a fence of more than 900 kilometers on the borders with Ukraine and Belarus.
