The volumes exported by the Dutch pig sector in 2017 were at the highest level in 20 years. Despite a 27% contraction in China, the export volume increased by 6% to 913.400 tons. This is according to figures from AHDB Pork.
What is striking is that the Netherlands exported considerably more within Europe; compared to 2016, the volume increased by 17% to 698.000 tons. The Italians were major buyers (+7% to 132.000 tons). Sales to Germany increased the fastest: +20% to 110.000 tons. Sales also increased to Greece (+7% to 105.000 tons) and the United Kingdom (UK).
The increase in the UK (+11% to 65.000 tonnes) is somewhat conspicuous, because it is not in line with the sounds in the field. According to exporters, sales in the UK have been disappointing for some time. The export figures show that this is probably more a money issue than a volume issue. The exchange rate is deteriorating due to the devaluation of the British pound.
Loss in Asia
The sale of pork (excluding by-products) outside Europe was less smooth. On balance, the volume decreased by 18% to 215.000 tons; mainly driven by a significant loss in China. Sales dropped by more than 25% to 87.000 tons.
