Imports on the rise

The Netherlands largest buyer of German pork

9 April 2018 - Wouter Baan

Germany exported 3% less pork last year. The contraction is a result of less export to third countries, because sales within Europe actually increased. This is according to figures from the German statistical office Destatis.

Just like in 2015, the volume of pork sold is slightly below 3 million. Of the 2,92 million tons, more than 2 million remained within Europe. With 360.000 tons (+7%), the Netherlands purchased the largest volume. The Netherlands shares the top spot with Italy, which imported 4% less German pork last year.

Within Europe, sales to Poland rose by 6% to 213.000 tons. On the other hand, Denmark, with 121.000 tons, imported 8% less. Sales to Great Britain increased by 4% to 138.000 tons.

Big loss in China
Outside of Europe, Germany suffered significant damage in China. Sales to the country fell by 41% to 349.000 tons. The sharp decrease may be due to the fact that some German slaughterhouses in 2017 temporary were not allowed to export to China. Sales to Hong Kong, on the other hand, increased sharply (+39% to 116.000 tons).
