First official outbreak

African swine fever now also in Hungary

24 April 2018 - Wouter Baan

African swine fever has now also been officially diagnosed in Hungary. The virus was found in a dead wild boar, which was found near the Hungarian city of Gyöngyös.

The outbreak of African swine fever in this region comes as a big surprise. This is because the area is more than 200 kilometers away from Ukraine and Romania; in these countries the African swine fever previously noted. Not yet in Hungary.

While the official cause has not yet been determined, the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) believes the disease has spread through contaminated food. However, an investigation is still ongoing.

Hundreds of outbreaks
Up to the beginning of April, hundreds of cases of African swine fever have been reported in wild boars in the European Union (EU), including in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Italy, Poland, Ukraine, Czech Republic and Romania. By far the most outbreaks (about 1.000) have been identified in Poland. Now Hungary can also be added to this list.

African swine fever has also been detected in domestic pigs in Poland, Italy, Ukraine and Romania.
