Tönnies, the largest slaughterhouse in Germany, is taking a new direction. In addition to slaughtering animals, the meat company will now also produce dog and cat food.
Through the new subsidiary Petcura, Tönnies will produce pet food (the higher segment) for both domestic and foreign markets. This production will take place from Meppen (Lower Saxony). Previously, Tönnies only supplied slaughter by-products to the pet food industry.
Add value
According to Frank Duffe, director of Petcura, Tönnies wants to keep the value creation of part of the slaughter by-products in-house. Duffe was previously general manager at Tönnies. About 50 employees work in the factory in Meppen.
Tönnies hit one at the end of 2017 other subsidiary (Pharma Actioin) that processed slaughter by-products.
