Although the DCA BestPigletPrice (BPP) remains unchanged this week, the situation in the piglet market has not improved. How come?
The DCA BPP stabilized last week at €40 per piglet, after significant price drops in the previous weeks. The moment of stabilization came at a time when sentiment improved and balance was restored. However, the improvement is not continuing. A number of traders say that it is currently difficult to get all the piglets placed. Others are able to manage sales, although demand is certainly not wild.
In general, fattening pig farmers remain cautious about imposing, partly because the pig price doesn't know how to push through. What also plays a role in this is that there is a growth retardation in some stables. As a result, the pigs are sometimes postponed for a week; Logically, there is therefore less room to place new piglets.
Spain is no longer on the market
The traders who export to distant destinations report this Spain is hardly or not at all on the market. Sales to Germany are continuing reasonably well, although demand has declined somewhat. As in the Netherlands, this is a result of a slowdown in growth. The stable market situation is reflected by the German piglet price, which has remained at €45 per piglet for the fourth week in a row. This price level will probably be maintained in the coming week, given the trend report indicating 'unchanged'.
The piglet market is expected to have a slow summer; this when the pig price shows no significant improvement. It is therefore expected that the piglet price may be subject to a reduction(s) in the short to medium term. The statements at DCA markets show that there is still sufficient support for unchanged, meaning that the DCA BPP remains at €40.
Vion: meat sales deteriorated
Vion's pork price remains at €1,45 per kilo this week. The slaughterhouse reports that meat sales have not improved. Vion specifically mentions the attorneys, whose value has dropped considerably. While this part was the symbol for the improved sentiment in recent weeks. The expected improvement in bacon sales has also not materialized.
The expectation in the market was that the tightening pig supply would affect the pig price would boost. According to Vion, the shrinking supply has so far only been enough to support the pig price.
