The Belgian supermarket chain Delhaize is switching completely to bear meat. To this end, the supermarket chain will collaborate with a network of more than 200 pig farmers in Belgium. This writes the Belgian Felt.
The idea is that pork from a special breed of pig (Piétrain terminal boar, in combination with own dams) will be produced in the network of pig farmers, slaughterers, meat processors and feed companies (Heahlthy Farmers Association). This is to improve the taste and juiciness of the meat. The animals are also given a special feed; including with local grains and linseed.
Surcharge for additional costs
In 2014 Delhaize launched the 'Beter For Everyone' label. In this program, the supermarket chain tries to raise the bar every time. The decision to switch to boar meat is the latest welfare measure in this program. The participating pig farmers receive a compensation of €3,68 per pig delivered to cover the additional costs.
Belgian politicians have reacted with satisfaction to the step that Delhaize is taking. Ben Weyts, the Flemish Minister of Animal Welfare, speaks of a first on the Belgian market. In Germany there are already some supermarkets switched to bear meat.
Odor detection on the slaughter line
Delhaize tries to prevent the risk of 'stinkers' by means of odor detection at the slaughter line. Every week, 6.000 to 8.000 pigs are slaughtered for Delhaize. In their own words, about 2% of these are 'stinkers'.
