African swine fever on a large Romanian farm

2 July 2018 - Wouter Baan

African swine fever has been diagnosed at a pig farm in Romania with 45.000 animals. The entire company has been locked and all pigs are culled. Meanwhile, Europe is developing a vaccine.

De contamination was found last week in a ward with 600 animals. The Romanian Food Safety Authority (ANSVSA) announced on Monday 2 July that all animals will be culled. The carcasses of the slaughtered pigs are also destroyed. Under the supervision of the Ministry of Defense, these are burned in incinerators.

The company is located in the Tulcea district, which borders Ukraine. At the beginning of June, outbreaks at backyard farms in this area were reported by the Romanian authorities. These farms were probably infected because wild boars crossed the border from Ukraine.

Develop vaccine
To stop the spread of the virus, the European Commission is developing a vaccine. This currently exists not yet† The Commission is releasing an amount of up to €10 million for this purpose.
