China will allow the import of pork fat from the Netherlands for human consumption again. The export of this probably brings in several million euros every year.
After more than 6 years of negotiations, the countries have reached an agreement. The agreement was signed in The Hague on Monday 2 July by Minister Carola Schouten (Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality) and her Chinese colleague Ni Yuefeng. MVO, the chain organization for oils and fats, and the Association of Processors for Slaughter By-Products (VVS) are delighted with this result.
Dutch pork fat was already going to China, but it was only intended for the animal feed industry. The Chinese use pork fat as an ingredient in soup and as a raw material in the confectionery industry.
Nice addition
The Chinese sales market is a welcome addition to the export of Dutch pork fat. Until 2014, Russia was an important sales market; however, that market has been closed since the summer of 2014. This in response to European sanctions against Russia, due to the annexation of Crimea and the outbreak of African swine fever in Eastern Europe. The last charge is late 2017 cancelled.
