120 million euros for the purchase of pig farms

7 July 2018 - Redactie Boerenbusiness

Carola Schouten (Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality) is allocating €120 million to buy up pig farms. This is stated in the outline agreement 'warm remediation of pig farming', which Schouten sent to the House on Saturday 7 July. A total of €200 million has been reserved for the remediation.

The purpose of the agreement is tackling odor nuisance from pig farms in livestock-dense areas. At the same time, the agreement is committed to vitalizing the sector. "The cabinet will examine with the sector and the relevant provinces how we can tackle this problem," said Schouten in the letter to parliament.

2 tracks
The cabinet has earmarked €200 million for the remediation. In doing so, the minister uses a two-track approach. The first track is short-term odor reduction through the remediation and termination of locations/companies that want to stop. "This will be achieved through the purchase and cancellation of pig rights. These are companies with a major odor impact on local residents in the south and east region (as described in the Fertilizers Act). A budget of €2 million is planned for this," writes. Scouts to the Chamber.

The second track concerns the developments and investments in new stable and livestock farming systems. This measure applies to several sectors and is aimed at a substantial reduction and the prevention of harmful emissions from stables. In total, the cabinet is allocating €60 million for this, of which €40 million will go to pig farming.

Elaboration
The ministry works together with the provinces of Noord-Brabant, Utrecht, Overijssel and Gelderland, the Association of Dutch Municipalities and the Coalition Vitalization Pig Farming. In the second half of this year, the measures will be further elaborated and legally defined. "I aim to publish the necessary regulations in the first quarter of 2019, after which the package of measures can be implemented," says Schouten.
