African swine fever is approaching the German border and has recently shown that it can bridge great distances. As a result, experts judge that the risk of African swine fever is high. Various bills to tackle animal disease, including a harvest ban, have been positively received.
The threat from Eastern Europe is increasing, because (after the outbreaks in Poland) new infections have also taken place in Romania and Hungary. However, this was not only about wild boars, but also about 'tame' pigs. As a result, several German experts indicate that the risk on the outbreak of the animal disease.
Fear of entry
The recent outbreaks thus show that the disease can travel great distances. This makes the fear of the introduction of African swine fever increasingly real. Pig farmers are therefore concerned about their sow herds and the possible damage caused by an outbreak.
To accommodate farmers, the government is working on measures† For example, at the beginning of June, bills were tabled for more powers in the event of an outbreak, including a harvest ban† The Federal Council in Germany has received the proposals positively, as it turned out on Friday 6 July.
However, it is emphasized that the measures entail significant financial burdens for the Länder. More money has therefore been requested in order to be able to take preventive measures and to allow crisis management to take place. Something that has been well received by the German pig farmers' union.
Compensation not the case
What has been shot is any compensation in the event of a harvest ban. In addition, 1 new measure is mentioned; the use of hunting dogs when using motorized vehicles.
The Federal Council's comments and comments are now being processed as quickly as possible, after which the government can proceed with the next step in implementing the measures.
