Stable pig price is difficult to maintain

11 July 2018 - Herma van den Pol - 1 reaction

In the second week of July, pig prices will also remain at the level they were at the beginning of June. It's bad news for pig farmers, but it could have been worse. The question is becoming more and more emphatic how long can the price remain stable?

The pig market unanimously indicates that the market is stuck. An impasse. Slaughterhouses are barely able to maintain sales, let alone command higher prices. Against this background, the lower pig supply is seen as good news, but the question is for how long the offer remains limited.

A decline can set off a chain reaction

Everything for a stable price
Summer is actually never a good time for this the sales of meat and piglets, but this year the mood is clearly worse than in other years. Prices usually remain stable in the summer months, but that will be even more exciting this year. A single trader indicates that slaughterhouses do everything they can to keep the price stable, because a drop can set off a chain reaction. By which he refers to the end user, who will then focus on lower prices.

Compaxo likes the price in week 28 at €1,31 per kilo, Van Rooi quotes €1,39 per kilo, Tönnies quotes €1,44 per kilo and the North/West quotation also remains at €1,44 per kilo. Things went a little more smoothly at the July 10 fair. For example, 2.025 pigs were offered, but ultimately 1.595 pigs changed hands. This at prices from €1,49 to €1,52.

No piglet surplus yet
These are uncertain times for fattening pig farmers, because the pigs that are now coming onto the market were purchased at a high price as piglets. Things are not much better on the piglet market, because there is hardly any demand. So far, the players on the market have managed to find a place for the piglets, so there is no surplus yet. However, the tension is also increasing here. It can no longer be ruled out that prices will fall further. The North/West quotation remains unchanged this week at €1,44 per kilo.
