Polish pig farmers struggle with ASF

20 July 2018 - Herma van den Pol

In Poland, measures to detect and control African swine fever (ASF) have been tightened. For example, the finder's fee for dead wild boars has been increased and various measures are being discussed in the sector.

Anyone who finds a dead wild boar in Poland can ASF area earn a finder's fee of €45. Outside the ASF area, that amount is €22,80. With this the Polish government hopes to get a better grip on the animal disease. The sick animals usually hide, which is why it is estimated that only 10% has been found.

70.000 swine shot
The compensation for boar hunting has also been increased. This rises to 700 zloty, which is converted to €161,79, for 1 pig from the infected area. 25 new cases of infected wild boars were found between June 1 and July 55. It yields a total of 1.500 animals. Hunters shot 70.000 wild boars from April to the end of June.

Poland has been trying to get a grip on animal disease since 2014. So far without success. The infected area has in the meantime Bickery has an to the coast and along the external borders with Belarus and Lithuania.

Limit unregistered slaughter
One of the proposed measures is to limit the slaughter of pigs 'at home'. This applies in the ASF risk area. It is something that has resulted in a conflict between the professional companies and private pig farms. The proposal comes from the representative for Polish pig farmers. They argue that the unregistered sale of potentially infected meat the risk increase the spread.

Another measure, which is being discussed in the Polish media, is to introduce compensation for the sow farmers who leave the sector. This is aimed at smaller companies and provides for an amount of 136 zloty, converted €31 per animal, up to a maximum of 50 pigs. There is also the option of recovering part of the costs incurred for measures against ASF.

Many stoppers in the east
The above means a decrease in the number of farms in eastern Poland, where many pig farmers have already stopped in recent years. Despite the many measures, a new infection was detected on a smaller company on 19 July.

In total there have been 38 outbreaks on farms with 1 to 50 pigs, 6 on farms with 51 to 100 pigs, 8 outbreaks on farms up to 500 pigs, 3 outbreaks on farms with 501 to 1.000 animals and 5 outbreaks on farms with more than 1.000 animals. Not only Poland is struggling with ASF, but also in the Ukraine they are struggling to get a grip on the animal disease.
