African swine fever (ASF) has been detected at one of the production sites of RusAgro, the third largest pig integration in Russia.
The outbreak at RussianAgro was found in mid-July on a sow farm with 12.500 pigs in the Belgorod Oblast region, the part of Russia that borders Europe. The animals are being culled by the Russian food watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor. In its own words, the company uses the highest hygiene protocols. It is not yet known how the outbreak could have happened.
Multiple outbreaks
ASF was also detected on another sow farm with 6.200 pigs in the Kaliningras Oblast region. In recent weeks, Russia reported as many as 9 outbreaks of ASF to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE). 5 of these were cases in pig farming; the other 4 cases concerned ASF in wild boars.
