Hopes of stable pig prices have yet to be pushed forward. The outbreak of African swine fever in Belgium brings a lot of tension and a ...
Due to the outbreak of African swine fever, the mood on the pig market is (very) nervous; especially in Belgium. The country can no longer sell the meat to third markets, while the live pigs are not purchased by foreign slaughterhouses. It brings with it immense supply pressure.
The Belgian quotes reflect the critical situation. For example, Danis's quotation fell by as much as €0,11 to €0,86 per kilo (live). Meat quotations in Belgium are falling in the same order of magnitude. Various piglet quotations also plummeted this week by more than €3.
Pushing for a slaughter hook
The situation in Belgium has repercussions on the rest of Europe. Pig farmers are also keen to supply pig farmers in surrounding countries such as the Netherlands and Germany. When Vion kept the quotation unchanged on Monday, September 17, it was expected that the pig price might find a bottom. However, the situation is deteriorating day by day. For example, the German pig price (the VEZG quotation) fell by €0,04 to €1,40 per kilo on Wednesday. Also the Dutch slaughterhouses responded to this. The VEZG quotation fell this week by €0,04 to €1,40 per kilo.
Although slaughterhouses miss out on the usual supply from Belgium, there is talk of a wide supply. The moderate temperatures mean that the pigs on many farms quickly gain weight. By the way, the supply of slaughter sows is: not spacious, but that does not alter the fact that sow prices are also under pressure.
'Dump sales at meat market'
The European meat market is being disrupted by dump sales from Belgium. Belgian slaughterhouses try to create space in the cold stores with cheap bids. This disrupts the European market, resulting in red listings for many carcass parts. Outside Europe, slaughterhouses speak of stable volumes at disappointing prices.
In China, African swine fever has now been diagnosed in an eighth province. This concerns Jilin province; this is located in the north of China on the border with North Korea. The number of official outbreaks is now close to 20. Classical swine fever was again recorded in a wild boar in Japan this week. This brings the counter to 2.
