New outbreaks in Belgium and China

26 September 2018 - Wouter Baan - 7 comments

In Belgium, another 5 cases of African swine fever have been detected (in wild boars). This brings the total number of infections to 14. In addition, the virus in China is advancing further and further towards the west of the country.

The new infections in Belgium were found in the already established infected zone of 63.000 hectares in the province of Luxembourg. It has now been decided that all pigs kept in this area will be culled, while the area will also be (partially) fenced.

The outbreaks of African swine fever have put a lot of tension on the pigs- and piglet market resulting in falling prices. Denis Ducarme, the Belgian Minister of Agriculture, is therefore considering support measures for pig farmers.

Yet another outbreak in China
An outbreak of the animal disease has also been identified in China. This time it was hit in the province of Inner Mongolia, which is located in the north of China (on the border with Mongolia). The total number of infections is now reaching 25.

The authorities have taken additional measures to stop the outbreaks. For example, it is prohibited to process pig blood in pig feed. Several transport bans have already been announced in the past. There are reports of Chinese pig farmers trying to pass through them, using smuggling routes and forged documents.

Low risk in the Netherlands
The chance that the animal disease will break out in the Netherlands is small. This is in a Verkaring of the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality. It states that experts consider the chance very small that the virus will spread to the Netherlands through migration of wild boars. The chance of this happening through human action is greater, but is estimated as small to medium.

Where does Minister Schouten get the wisdom that the outbreak of ASF in the Netherlands is very small?

Totally agree with Jos Gommers. There is little difference here with Belgium. The chance that people can transfer it is just as great in the Netherlands as in Belgium. And whether it falls in Maastricht or in North Friesland. That makes no difference to our country and therefore to Dutch pig farming. It's just waiting for the day it's going to happen. Resulting in bankruptcy of the Dutch and Belgian pig farming. Cold remediation, which also fits well with the anti-animal groups and environmental fanatics. There is a lot of fear that the latter might also want to lend us a hand. To tip over then.

The statements of Mrs. Schouten are unbelievable.
What a bunch of naives there in The Hague.

here in Belgium the greens say that the hunters transmitted this virus by going hunting in Poland and thus brought this virus with them on their footwear. The hunters have nothing to gain from doing this.
But who's to tell us the Greens didn't? if a plague breaks out, all borders are closed immediately, prices go down, pig farmers go bankrupt or stop, so so many fewer animals, and that's what they want, right?

You notice from statements like this that the minister has never experienced an animal disease up close, otherwise you wouldn't act so naively. And if it breaks out, she won't suffer financially. It is unbelievable that the LTO accepts this and does not take the minister to court for maladministration.

In 1997 , Van Aertsen called out when swine fever broke out . We have mastered this in no time . This farmer is not to blame. I don't have to tell you what happened after. When this didn't work, he looked for scapegoats (bumps among the farmers, transporters, Ki, Etc). What came up after that in terms of purchase, pig free zone, Log areas, etc. was partly implemented but many things were impossible or too expensive. In the end , however , some companies were reorganized or turned their necks around . Cost price up revenue price can not keep up . Now the government itself has created the possibility that through connecting zones the wild pigs can easily take other areas. Zero position is made impossible by making hunting difficult with rules and laws. It is not impossible that the wild pig ended up in certain areas through human action. Now the minister is probably making the same mistake as then. We're doing well. So if it should break out , scapegoats will have to be sought again . Because then the wild pigs will not be blamed . Someone must have messed up . So they will intervene again with meaningful measures in their eyes . Keeping the wild pigs away did not fit in with their nature policy and would have been too simple. And when bringing it back to zero , people would also rub some citizens against the grain . As long as they don't walk in the city they are still sacred. But one thing is certainly not only the farmer will suffer if in a few years thousands of zero - standing areas will be roaming around , as well as plow the garden in the city and knock over tons of waste And then shooting is no longer a bad thing . It is actually more a voter's interest than an economic one. Many citizens few farmers.

Yes Driekus it's about the voters. If the first children or ponies are attacked by a wolf, it will become painfully clear what a natural ranking entails and politicians will have to take measures and if the wild pigs start to plow the Randstad, there will be a reaction from the press and then like tame sheep, politics!
It will not be long before a party for omnivores is formed to put a stop to the current animal madness in response to PVD.
