The piglet market has been characterized by a lack of demand for weeks. The supply of single couples exerts great pressure. This is also the case in Germany, where the price has definitively fallen to the lowest level ever (€29 per piglet). The trend report does indicate that the German piglet price will not drop further this week.

Little trust
De constant pig price on paper the piglet market should offer some support. It remains to be seen whether this will be noticed. Sales in Germany are being hampered this week by the cancellation of 1 slaughter day. Apart from that, German fattening pig farmers are still waiting to impose; departments are increasingly left empty. The smaller grain harvest, which increases feed costs, also has something to do with this.

The German piglet prize in historical perspective.

Moreover, there is little confidence in a recovery of the pig price. The piglets that are laid up will be marketed as fattening pigs in January/February. Historically speaking, that is not a good period. Interest in stocking may increase when the fattening pigs are ready for slaughter in March/April. At the same time, this possibility is overshadowed by the threat of African swine fever.

Given the current circumstances, sales in the Netherlands (the fixed connections) are going reasonably well. However, the number of individual couples is large and traders are (almost) unable to sell them properly.

Latest BPP reduction?
In both the Netherlands and Germany, quotations have fallen to historically low levels. Traders are increasingly opting that further reductions do not make sense. Many traders indicate that they want to lower one more time to form a bottom. Based on the statements, the DCA BestPigletPrice decreases by €1 to €1 per piglet.

Vion corrects
Vion's listing remained unchanged over the past 2 weeks, while the other pig prices did decrease. That is why the slaughterhouse is correcting this week by €0,04 to €1,37 per kilo. Vion talks about difficult sales with rapidly falling prices (forehead and bacon). This is due to the outbreak of African swine fever in Belgium.
