Brazil reports classical swine fever outbreak

10 October 2018 - Wouter Baan

Authorities in Brazil officially confirmed an outbreak of classical swine fever last week. It is the first outbreak since 2009.

The animal disease was already detected in August on a pig farm in the Ceará region, which is located in the northeast of Brazil. However, the outbreak was only officially confirmed by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) last week.

Export position not at risk
A windfall for the Brazilian pig sector is that the company is located outside the swine fever free zone. That zone includes 17 Brazilian states. In addition, the company is located more than 2.000 miles from the country's main manufacturing region.

This means that the export position of the Brazilian pig sector is not directly endangered, the Ministry of Agriculture in Brazil has announced.

African swine fever
Classical swine fever also recently surfaced Japan on. Meanwhile, African swine fever is spreading in Europe and China. The virus emerged in mid-September Belgium† In the meantime, the animal disease has already been detected in 70 of the 126 wild boars examined.
