France puts fence on border with Belgium

12 October 2018 - Redactie Boerenbusiness - 1 reaction

France is taking drastic preventive measures to prevent an outbreak of African swine fever. The country places a fence on the border with Belgium. Access to the forests in Meuse, Meurthe-et-Moselle and the Ardennes is also prohibited from Friday 12 October.

Although an outbreak has not yet been officially identified in France, the Ministry of Agriculture has banned all movements in the forests in the French departments of Meuse, Meurthe-et-Moselle and the Ardennen.

With these preventive measures, the pig sector must be protected against animal disease. There are 28 pig farms in the Meuse and 86 pig farms in Meurthe-et-Moselle.

Pig sector priority
Protecting the sector is number one in the measures, much to the chagrin of forestry and tourism companies. "The decisions were taken in Paris and were considered with experts from the European Union. We are in a period of crisis, with a great danger for the French pig industry. The urgency is to freeze everything to prevent contamination," the statement said. Prefect of Meurthe-et-Moselle to know local media.

We must also adopt this measure here, just fence all areas where wild boars are present 100% with a heavy grid and close it to all people and if someone has to be in the area when leaving, shower and disinfect this measure is normal at conventional pig farming. The pig farmer should not cause a nuisance to society, so the wild boar farmers are no better than the pig farmer, shooting everything is not an option because you will never get the last one
