France is taking drastic preventive measures to prevent an outbreak of African swine fever. The country places a fence on the border with Belgium. Access to the forests in Meuse, Meurthe-et-Moselle and the Ardennes is also prohibited from Friday 12 October.
Although an outbreak has not yet been officially identified in France, the Ministry of Agriculture has banned all movements in the forests in the French departments of Meuse, Meurthe-et-Moselle and the Ardennen.
With these preventive measures, the pig sector must be protected against animal disease. There are 28 pig farms in the Meuse and 86 pig farms in Meurthe-et-Moselle.
Pig sector priority
Protecting the sector is number one in the measures, much to the chagrin of forestry and tourism companies. "The decisions were taken in Paris and were considered with experts from the European Union. We are in a period of crisis, with a great danger for the French pig industry. The urgency is to freeze everything to prevent contamination," the statement said. Prefect of Meurthe-et-Moselle to know local media.
