For weeks, piglet prices floated at historically low levels. In the meantime, the oversupply has disappeared from the market and, very cautiously, some demand is emerging again. While opinions differ on how much demand has improved, the DCA BestPigletPrice shows…
The fact that piglet prices are at historically low levels is clearly reflected on the farm. Figures from ABN-AMRO and Wageningen Economic Research (WUR) show that shortages in sow farmingdon't lie about it.
Trend notification: +€1
It is probably very important for sow farmers to leave the price trough as quickly as possible. Now that the oversupply is losing ground, we can cautiously look upwards again. The German piglet price is heading for an increase of €1 per piglet this week, the trend report indicates. Over the past week, the record low is still maintained at €28 per piglet. The trend report is based on an improvement in demand and there is reason for this.
The piglets that are laid up during these weeks will be marketed as fattening pigs at the end of February / beginning of March. This is usually the start of the spring revival on the pig market. Historically, the piglets can be placed in the pens dirt cheaply. The pig price can still make all kinds of movements in the next 4 months. For example, there are signals that the export of pork to China may pick up again, although opportunism must be guarded against. If African swine fever spreads to the Netherlands or Germany, the cards are completely different.
Larger couples better requested
In the Netherlands, the demand for piglets has been cautiously increasing again since the middle of last week. Especially the larger couples are in higher demand. As a signal of an improved undertone, the DCA BestPigletPrice increases by €0,50 to €24,50 per piglet. It must be said that not every trader is yet convinced of the slightly better mood.
Vion listing unchanged
Vion's pig price remains unchanged for the fourth week at €1,35 per kilo. The slaughterhouse speaks of a wide range of pigs and increasing slaughter weights. There is some price pressure on the meat market this week, due to the loss of slaughter and processing days in parts of Germany and other European countries.
