Westfleisch will discourage bear fattening

28 December 2018 - Wouter Baan

The German slaughterhouse Westfleisch will start cutting back on boar meat from mid-January. With a change in the pay table, the cooperative slaughterhouse wants to discourage pig farmers from delivering boars.

The change means the valuation of the shoulders drops. Calculated with the current yields, this results in a discount of €1,15 per pig. This autumn, the German slaughter company Tönnies announced similar measures.

Remove financial incentive
With the discount on boar meat, Westfleisch equalizes the appreciation between the boars and castrated borgs. With this it wants to remove the economic incentive from pig farmers to deliver boars.

The underlying idea is that the sales market for bear meat is limited. Delivery of boars remains an option for the contract suppliers of the slaughterhouse.
