On Wednesday, January 73.000, African swine fever was diagnosed at a Chinese pig farm with 2 animals. Never before has such a large company been affected.
The outbreak took place in China's Heilongjiang province, which is located in northeastern China. The symptoms of disease have been detected in at least 4.500 pigs and the protocols prescribe that all animals on the farm must be culled.
An outbreak on such a large farm has never happened before, as African swine fever usually strikes the smaller, so-called 'backyard farms'. The largest outbreak to date occurred in mid-October on a farm with 20.000 pigs.
Danish investor
Remarkably, the affected company is owned by a Danish investment fund called: 'Heilongjiang Asia-Europe Animal Husbandry'. This company has a sow herd of 15.000 animals and has the ambition to increase production to 385.000 fattening pigs per year.
The pig farm has only been up and running for a few years and has modern production facilities. This means that hygiene measures are high. Since the first outbreak in August, more than 100 pig farms in China were affected by the animal disease.
