Piglet price picks up rising trend again soon

7 January 2019 - Wouter Baan

Around the turn of the year, the DCA BestPigletPrice briefly interrupted its upward trend, but the interruption did not last long. This week, the quote is on the way up again.

The biggen market is also characterized by shortages at the beginning of January. Because there was 1 trading day (January 1) in the past week, the shortage was less apparent. As a result, the DCA BestPigletPrice stabilized at €36,50 per piglet. The quotation of Vion increased in week 1 by €0,50 per piglet to €37 per piglet (including 9% VAT).

Meanwhile, the tightness reappears. This is also reflected in the delivery weights, which some traders say are getting lower by the week. Traders speak of a good question. However, the fattening pig farmers sometimes find the increases a bit (too) fast, given that pig prices are not showing signs of upward movement in the short to medium term. This does not alter the fact that the perspective on the market not bad but that, of course, remains to be seen. The pig price of Vion for week 2 remains at €1,39 per kilo.

Export is going well
The first quotation of the Nord/West piglet price is unchanged (€36,50 per piglet). There are also stories from Germany that the supply is tight; something that is confirmed by Dutch exporters. This explains why the trend report for this week is set at a plus of $1 per piglet. In addition to the good sales opportunities in Germany, the Spaniards are also on the market.

Although some traders at DCA-Markets are again arguing for 'unchanged', the center of gravity of the returns points to an increase again. The BPP thus increases by €0,50 to €37 per piglet (excluding VAT).
