Walloons enlarge buffer zone against AVP

11 January 2019 - Redactie Boerenbusiness

The Walloon government announced additional measures on Friday 11 January, after consultation with the European authorities, in an attempt to halt the advancing African swine fever. René Collin, the Walloon Minister of Agriculture, announced this.

After there tuesday 8 january 2 infected wild boars were found, the government does not want to take any more risks and therefore it is increasing the established buffer zone by 3.700 hectares to the west. The buffer will also be expanded to the north by 850 hectares.

A hunting and recreation ban applies in the buffer zone. In addition, all wild boars in the area are culled. Several traps are placed in the new area (which has been added to the buffer zone). A fencing around the area is also under construction and night patrols are being set up (in collaboration with hunters).

Cross-border cooperation
Collin will also speak to his French counterpart Didier Guillaume on this subject on Friday 11 January. The aim is to strengthen cross-border cooperation in this area.
