Disagreement about piglet price is growing

14 January 2019 - Wouter Baan - 4 comments

The piglet price has been rising for weeks. Whether that upward trend can be continued in the coming weeks remains to be seen. The discussion in the market is mainly about whether or not to increase further.

After the turn of the year, the DCA BestPigletPrice resumed its upward trend and other piglet quotations also turned green at the start of 2019. The Spanish quotation increased last week by €1 to €39,50 per piglet and appears to be reaching 'forties' in the short term.

Resistance to higher piglet prices is increasing. A minority of traders have been opting for a stable price for a few weeks and this group is growing. They think that is the same pig price should set a ceiling for piglet prices.

Sales are easy
On the other hand, many traders are also calling for further increases. The main argument for this is that sales have few obstacles. The demand for piglets is good and the supply is low. It should be noted that there are no extreme shortages, although delivery weights are decreasing somewhat.

In Germany too, (Dutch) piglets are easily sold among fattening pig farmers. The German piglet price (Nordwest) increased by €1 to €37,50 per piglet. On the other hand, the trend this week (+€0,50) is slightly lower than previous weeks. There are also good sales opportunities at excellent prices in Spain. On the open market, prices rise to just under €50 per piece.

Vion and BPP
The statements at DCA-Markets show that a majority of traders are in favor of an increase. The DCA BestPigletPrice increases by €1 to €38 per piglet.

On the other hand, Vion's pig price remains at €1,39 per kilo. However, the pressure on the pig price is building up, according to the slaughterhouse's comments. The ample supply of heavy pigs is becoming increasingly difficult to value as a result of declining prices on the meat market; especially the front piece and the procurator are declining in value.
