The silence on the pig market has been broken now that the Internet exchange has taken a serious step up. The question is how pig prices will react to this.

The signs of a drying up supply in Germany are becoming clearer as the week progresses. The frost has also gripped Germany and that causes and causes growth retardation in the finisher pigs. Since German slaughterhouses are said to slaughter 'full bowl', the pig supply is quickly dwindling. A vote is then taken by various parties.

The optimistic mood is not surprising; after all, the Internet exchange rose by €25 to €0,04 per kilo on Friday 1,46 January. The last time such pluses were on the boards was in mid-August. Afterwards, prices were predominantly under pressure. The hunger for higher pig prices is therefore great.

Slaughterhouses are reluctant
However, it is questionable whether slaughterhouses will go along with their pricing, because they do not make the meat more expensive in the cold store want to lay. Tönnies has a clear vision and emphasizes that the falling meat prices are putting pressure on the pig price. Vion also recently made similar noises, while Danish Crown is also reluctant. These parties slaughter more than every week half of all pigs in Germany; their influence is therefore great. The smaller slaughterhouses also express resistance.

In the Netherlands, the supply of pigs is rather ample than tight. In addition, the pigs are very heavy. The average slaughter weight last week was 99,6 kilos; never before were pigs so heavy. A weight discount therefore applies to various batches. It takes time for the supply to slim down and the weights to drop. Exporting live pigs to Germany is not always an option, as the pay table is often less favorable there.

DCA Scholarship Award
Despite the uncertainty about meat sales and the moment to indicate the direction, an increase is unavoidable. This is apparent from the explanation that accompanies the DCA Scholarship 2.0 on a weekly basis. The slaughtered pigs plus by €0,01, causing the price to creep to €1,29 per kilo. The price of live pigs follows this example and amounts to €1,04 per kilo.
