African swine fever in 3 places in Vietnam

20 February 2019 - Tim Roetman

African swine fever was diagnosed at 3 different locations in Vietnam on Tuesday 19 February. Previously, there were strong suspicions of an outbreak, and the government has now confirmed this.

The affected pig farms are located in Hung Yen province, near the capital Hanoi. This is striking, because the affected area does not border on China. How then the animal disease in Vietnam is therefore still a mystery. It is suspected that this was brought over from China by imported pork.

Major producer
Vietnam is a major pork producer and the country has about 30 million pigs. In contrast, the country imports and exports very little, mainly because it is self-sufficient and there are virtually no export opportunities for other countries.
