Heavy pigs at equal prices

1 March 2019 - Wouter Baan

It is not often that pigs were delivered to Dutch slaughterhouses in such a heavy weight. It may not put pressure on the pig price, but it doesn't help either.

The pig market took its first step upwards at the beginning of February, but then the price stalled again. The German pig price (the VEZG quotation) is now €1,40 per kilo for the fourth week in a row. The pig supply is not extensive, but does not provide enough incentive to further increase the quotations. The pig supply is in line with demand.

The Internet Exchange is also holding steady and remained the same at €1 per kilo on Friday, March 1,47. This means that the distance to the German pork price remains maximally stretched, which shows a positive undertone.

The German pork price resumes its stable line.

Slaughter weight above 100 kilos
In the Netherlands, the pig supply is more than sufficient and there is little or no changing market conditions. The slaughter figures are consistently at a high level. Last week, 316.000 pigs were slaughtered, with an average weight of 99,30 kilos. The week before, the slaughter weight even recorded 101 kilos, which is historically a high level. Slaughterhouses notice this several times. In Germany, the slaughter figure is on the rise again and last week amounted to 967.503 pigs.

The fact that the slaughter weights are high indicates that pig farmers can deliver in advance for the time being. Although there are fewer fattening pigs in the pipeline sitting, it will probably take a while before tightness becomes apparent. Higher pig prices will probably have to come from Germany before Dutch quotes respond. However, German slaughterhouses, such as Tönnies and Danish Crown, are reluctant and probably want to postpone higher pig prices as long as possible; also in view of the tight supply that is likely to come.

Stable DCA Scholarship Price 2.0
For the time being, higher pork prices based on meat sales are not a feasible option. The DCA Exchange Price 2.0 therefore remains at €1,32 per kilo. The price of live pigs is also flat at €1,06 per kilo.
