Czech Republic successfully eradicates African swine fever

19 March 2019 - Tim Roetman

The World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) and the European Union recently confirmed that the Czech Republic is definitively free from African swine fever. This ruling could ensure that the Czech Republic regains more freedom of trade.

When African swine fever is diagnosed in a country, many countries impose import bans on that country. The ruling by the OIE and the European Commission is expected to result in the removal of these for the Czech Republic. In February It was also written that the country is free from the animal disease, although this had not yet been formally confirmed at the time.

Effective control
The Czech Republic had an effective fight against the virus. The country established a 'core zone' at an early stage, which prohibited wild boar hunting. Outside that zone, wild boars were hunted intensively; the animals in the core zone died of animal disease and hunting outside of it prevented the virus from spreading. A similar control method is used in Belgium.
