Until recently, piglet prices seemed to be out of reach. However, now that the mood on the pig market has changed, the demand for piglets is increasing again.
The rising piglet prices have caused resistance among fattening pig farmers in recent weeks. They believed that the pig price had to rise seriously before piglet prices could take new steps. Pig prices took a serious step up last week, and that is good for the demand for piglets.
Several traders report that demand has improved in a short period of time. The resistance of fattening pig farmers has faded into the background, although it has not disappeared at all. This will of course require more price increases.
Vion's pig price this week also reflects the improved sentiment on the pig market. The quotation increases by €0,04 to €1,47 per kilo. The slaughterhouse speaks of improved market conditions in China, but at the same time says that it takes effort to achieve higher selling prices in Europe.
Good demand for piglets
The German piglet price (North/West quotation) increases by €0,50 to €43 per piglet. The trend report for this week indicates an increase of €1. This underlines the good demand for German piglets; there is still an imbalance between supply and demand. The Danish piglet price has also risen sharply. Converted to euros, this increases by €2,65 to €52,25 per piglet (of 30 kilos).
The piglets are also being pulled from Spain. The result of this is that there are few free couples in the Netherlands, which are traded for relatively high prices. All in all, the piglet market is in a good flow, which has received a boost from higher pig prices.
Higher GDP
The DCA BestPigletPrice therefore increases by €1 to €45 per piglet. However, the seasonal supply is increasing again in the background, but that does not prevent higher piglet prices in the short term.
