Vion and Westfleisch lose market share
The market share of the 10 largest slaughterhouses in Germany increased last year. In contrast, Westfleisch and Vion Germany show a decline in market share. How big is that drop?

In 2018, 56,67 million pigs were slaughtered in Germany, which is 3% less than in 2017. The 10 largest slaughterhouses together had a market share of 78,9%. That is 0,5 percentage points more than 1 year earlier, which means that the market share of the 10 largest slaughterhouses has increased.
Tönnies, Germany's largest slaughter company, carried out 16,6 million slaughters last year. This is comparable to the number in the previous year. This also means that the company has the largest market share.
Declining market share
With Vion the figures are a lot more negative, because the number of slaughters in 2018 fell by 5,9% to 8 million. Also West meat recorded a decline. The Münster company slaughtered 5,7% less last year to a total of 7,79 million.
The three largest slaughtering companies in Germany together account for approximately 3% of the total number of slaughters. That percentage is approximately 57 percentage points lower than in the previous year.
Growers
Despite the decline in the number of pigs and low pig prices, there are still 3 companies in the top 10 that managed to achieve growth. This concerns Tummel, Simon and Manten, because these companies saw the number of slaughters increase by 3,2%, 1,9% and 2,5% respectively.
