AVP appears in isolated region of China

8 April 2019 - Tim Roetman

The first outbreak of African swine fever in China's Xinjiang province was Thursday, April 4. It is striking that the outbreak is at least 1.400 kilometers away from the nearest outbreak.

The outbreak occurred on a pig farm with 200 pigs, in which 15 animals were infected with African swine fever. All animals on the farm have now been culled. How the animal disease broke out in such an isolated region is still unknown.

Outbreak in other province
A first outbreak of African swine fever has also recently been confirmed in Tibet. This outbreak took place in Linzhi, near the border with India. Meanwhile, 55 pigs have died as a result of the outbreak of African swine fever.

The pig sector is relatively small in both provinces. Therefore, a large-scale outbreak in these provinces will not have a major effect on the size of the Chinese pig population. With these outbreaks, only 3 administrative regions remain in China that have not yet confirmed cases of African swine fever. These are Hainan, Hong Kong and Macau.
