20 April 2019 - Tim Roetman

Classical swine fever was first detected in Japan about 8 months ago. Since then, the country has culled more than 75.000 animals.

Japan first had to deal with classical swine fever in September 2018. Now, 8 months later, the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) reports that there are in the meantime 75.000 animals have been culled in the country.

Vaccination
Japan started vaccinating wild boars at the end of March. This is a striking choice, given that pig farmers have been clamoring for vaccinations for their pigs for months. However, Japan is avoiding vaccinating pigs, mainly because it will hinder pork exports.

To prevent the spread of the sickness To prevent this, wild boars are vaccinated in 900 places. The vaccines are ingested through the feed. This means that the animals do not have to be vaccinated 1 by 1.

Multiple companies
27 pig farms have now been affected by classical swine fever. 75.554 pigs were culled on these pig farms. In addition, 506 wild boars have been discovered with the virus, of which 134 have died.
